Heading Back to the Dorm
The days are getting shorter and cooler and it’s time to think about the kids heading back to school. As college students pack up lap tops, bicycles, clothing, televisions and more, parents worry about the cost of replacing such items while mapping out what to do with the empty space they will be gaining at home. Will your Homeowners Policy cover these expensive, big ticket items if they are stolen? How about if your child lives off campus? Your homeowners policy will cover a percentage of contents away from home in their dorm. However, if your college student is renting an apartment off campus their belongings will not be covered. A renter’s policy is a smart idea for those students living off campus, it is an inexpensive way to cover belongings and throw in some liability as well. It’s also smart to look into if your child’s school offers a policy for contents coverage. Some schools do so with a very low deductible. This is helpful because it covers the smaller ticket items that you do not want to file a claim for on your homeowners policy in the event of a loss. Scheduling big ticket electronics is smart too, homeowners policies have limits on things such as jewelry, fine arts and computers.
